Gel coats: Tough, beautiful fiberglass protection

Builders of fiberglass boats know how important it is to construct hulls that are both attractive and durable. In most cases, striking that balance begins with the first layer of the fiberglass lay-up process: the gel coat layer. And because gel coat is so important in protecting a boat's fiberglass construction while maintaining aesthetics, Genmar is committed to refining and improving the quality of the gel coat used for its boats. Protection from the sun
As the first layer applied to the mold in a typical fiberglass production process, gel coat is the thin, glossy exterior finish that holds the boat's color. Most gel coat finishes today are UV-resistant, meaning they protect the hull's color from fading under sunlight, which happened often in older boats.
Environmental protection
Genmar used a premium gel coat with a vinylester barrier coat that maintains the integrity of the outside surface and protects the laminate with its tough outer shell. Its glossy luster stands up to years of weathering and has a low amount of volatile organic compounds.
